I haven’t done a group interview before and I am going to be interviewed in this way initially and then they make a cut and those that make it go on to a face to face interview with the recruiting panel
The position is Airport Team Member (ticketing, check in, Departure gate, assessing baggage weight limits, general duties at aiport)
Has anyone out there in Answers-land done this interview/this type of interview and can you advise what questions and what to expect?
Have you worked as an airline customer service person at the airport?
All answers/ideas/advice gratefully received
Thanks in advance!
Don’t dominate. Don’t be bossy. Try to encourge the others in any group exercise.
If you have to do pairs-interviews, here’s the trick;
First, you’re split into pairs and after a set time, have to introduce each other. Take out a piece of paper, each. Tell the other person you know the secret to doing this and start writing…
"Education, me, degrees in XYZ, So-and-so university. You?"
"Travel, backpacked through Thailand, year abroad in Germany…" etc.
Work experience, family, interests and get a good story about each other if you have time ("Once met…") Jot it all down.
Just scribble down as much as you can about each other and socialize later. Then when it’s your turn, you can each get up and give a whole speech on the other person. My partner and I nailed this game!
This is when it pays to talk to the other candidates beforehand and get to know them so that you don’t start off cold. One girl was delighted that I’d been to Prague, her hometown (rare at the time, still under Communism). One guy had just gotten his green card after years of being illegal.Try to coax out stuff like that. Find out about them, in the waiting room, in transit, in the restrooms…
I was interviewing for Flight Attendant but most of this applies to any ground staff employees who have contact with customers.
Please keep in mind that they are looking for cooperative team players, NOT leaders. Sure, if you end up guiding any exercises, it’s good but don’t let that be your goal. It’s a common trap.
Airline people need to get along, work with a group and dominating isn’t always an appreciated attribute. To be honest, they need more sheep than herders so don’t let on that you’re above keeping with the crowd.
Dress cleanly and conservatively. I come from a total Hippy family in California but I showed up looking like I trotted out of Wallstreet.
Sounds crazy but try to have fun. It’s an adventure so try to see it from that perspective.
Good luck!
