Al Qaeda drive to recruit Westerners worries US

(AFP) – Apr 5, 2008

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Attempts by Al-Qaeda to recruit Westerners has sparked deep concerns among US national security experts, who fear the country could be infiltrated by attackers with Caucasian looks and European or North American identification.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller told a congressional hearing Tuesday that the Al-Qaeda terror network was focusing its attention of recruiting Westerners because its leaders believed that bearers of valid European of North American passports could enter the United States more easily than other nationals.

The statement came two days after Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael Hayden made a similar revelation that Al-Qaeda was recruiting and training terrorists of Western origin.

"They are bringing operatives into that region for training — operatives that, a phrase I would use, wouldn’t attract your attention if they were going through the customs line at Dulles" airport in Washington, Hayden told NBC television last Sunday.

The new recruits "look Western" and "would be able to come into this country … without attracting the kind of attention that others might," he said.

"They could be anybody," said Matthew Levitt, an expert with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Al-Qaeda could recruit radicals from Europe who would be able to come to the United States "on valid passports perhaps through visa waiver programs," Levitt said.

Ted Galen Carpenter, an expert with Cato Institute, believes it is very difficult to gauge the number of people open to such recruitment because it could involve Western-looking European natives like Muslims from Bosnia or Kosovo.

"How many people? That’s very hard to measure," the expert pointed out. You’re talking certainly thousands of people."

Carpenter said that Al-Qaeda is looking for ways to thwart any kind of profiling strategy that the US and other governments might employ to single out possible threats from the huge numbers of people entering their countries each day.

Osama bin Laden and his associates have spoken in the past of using Muslims from the Balkans who do not fit the Arab Muslim stereotype to infiltrate countries, he said.

"There certainly are not many sympathizers for organizations like that in the West," he explained. "But they don’t need many."

Levitt recalled that British national Richard Reid, who attempted in 2001 to explode a bomb concealed inside a shoe aboard an American Airlines plane, carried a western passport. He said there were other similar cases.

Levitt recently met in Paris with French counterterrorism officials whom he said have the same worries. "German officials and British officials are similarly concerned."

According to Newsweek, the CIA director’s statements were prompted by a German investigation of a terrorist cell linked to an Uzbek group led by Fritz Gelowicz, a German national who converted to Islam and is now imprisoned in Germany.

But Brian Jenkins, a terrorism expert at Rand Corporation, believes that while while individuals coming into the United States could carry out terrorist attacks, "our greatest concerns right now are what I refer to as local home-grown terrorists — American citizens living right here."

"In the attacks in Turkey, in the attacks in Spain, in the attacks in London, in the plots that have been uncovered in Germany and Denmark, and other places, these were not teams of terrorists … being sent in from abroad, they were all from the inside," Jenkins said.

Seth Macfarlane came close to getting killed on september 11th!!!!!
From Wikipedia:

On the morning of September 11, 2001, MacFarlane was scheduled to return to Los Angeles on American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston, Massachusetts. Suffering from a hangover from the previous night’s celebrations, and an incorrect departure time from his travel agent,[81] he was unable to board the flight as the gates had been closed. Fifteen minutes after departure, American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked, and was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, obliterating the airplane and later destroying the building.

Thank god for hangovers haha

you should make a blog with random tidbits like this!!

To that girl USA: First off Im not upset about anything I was just stating something that happened. And Im not saying his death was would have been worse than anyone elses, Im just saying that I never realized he almost died. And yeah I think its pretty amazing to cheat death like that no matter who you are.

wow! i never would’ve realized that ever either! i am so glad he’s still alive! otherwise there would be no more family guy ever! without family guy, there’s just not too much comedy in tv at all. he’s an amazing voice actor!

I’m going from North Carolina, to Miami, to St. Lucia.. I’ve never flown in anything before except a helicopter and parasailing.. I’m really nervous.. Also American Airlines.. can you reassure me they’re okay.. Sandals booked them in our package..

If you’ve been parasailing and riding a helicopter, then you should have no fears. Flying American Airlines from N. Carolina to Miami to St. Lucia is nothing. Couple of naps and your there. Warm, cozy, and smooth. Listen to music, watch a movie, read a book. Have a good trip.

Ok, so i have to do a project in class, but its a short one, and we need to write down ten facts about 9/11. I all ready have 7 facts, and here they are:

The structural steel of the skyscraper, built to withstand winds in excess of 200 mph and a large conventional fire, could not withstand the tremendous heat generated by the burning jet fuel.

When the Second tower was it hit, it was turned around in a 360 direction.

Only six people in the World Trade Center towers at the time of their collapse survived. Almost 10,000 other people were treated for injuries, many severe.

The passengers fought the four hijackers and are suspected to have attacked the cockpit with a fire extinguisher. The plane then flipped over and sped toward the ground at upwards of 500 miles per hour, crashing in a rural field in western Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m.

At 8:45 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors.

The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations.

American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington and slammed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 AM.

New York took a catastrophic turn for the worse when the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed in a massive cloud of dust and smoke.

And those are facts i have right now. So if you could give me three more, it would be appreciated

343 Firefighters died in the collapse of the World Trade Center, along with 37 Port Authority police and 23 NYPD.

Approximately 200 people jumped to their deaths from the Towers.

The FAA ordered all aircraft to land immediately at the nearest airport and all commercial and private flights were cancelled.

Well you know family guy, obviously.

It’s creator Seth MacFarlane, who also plays Stewie, Brian and Peter Griffen was schedualed to fly on American Airlines Flight 11 - The first plane to hit the North Tower of the WTC. He woke up late and missed the flight by 30 minutes.

If he hadn’t woken up late on that dehumanising day - and had died on Flight 11, would Family Guy not be with us? Or did he have a co-founder?

Family Guy began before 9-11 so it already existed. But if he did die, we wouldn’t have new episodes.

I am a 13 year old military history "wiz-kid". However, I am embarrassed to admit that I am thouroghly confused on two military planes in particular.

I am in a national history competition and my entry is on Boeing’s works for the military. My specialty is the first and second WWs. I know ALL there is to know about the Boeing planes like the B-17 and B-29, PT-17 and Peashooter, Air Force One, FA-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, the Apache and the Chinook. I also know a great deal about the engine makers Pratt and Whitney and their holding companie’s merger with Boeing and companies like prop makers SPP and Hamilton and transport groups like Stout Airlines, United Air Lines, National Air Transport and BAT. I also know that Boeing had a "hand" in the making of the B-1 and the B-2. But, what parts did they make exactly?

Q#1. I recently traveled to the Boeing Flight Museum in Seattle, but was unable to determine how much of the Lancer and Spirit were actually manufactured by Boeing. I do know that of the B-2 Spirit, Northrop constructed the forward sections and cockpit, Vought produced the mid-fuselage sections and the aluminium and titanium and composite parts, while Boeing built the afte center and outboard sections. So, do you think that Boeing did enough of that plane for me to include it in my research?

Q#2. Also, I do know that Boeing was envolved in a competion with North American, GD and Rockwell for a new strategic bomber for the previous B-1A, but who won that competion? Did Rockwell make the majority of it? What I mean is, who built WHAT and WHAT parts did Boeing actually construct on the B-1s?

Q#3. Historically, I know of the Boeing mergers during WWII era, but since then, what companies has Boeing overtaken/bought-out? Does Boeing own Grumman, makers of the Wildcat and Tomcat AND McDonnell/Douglas who manufacured the Eagle and Phantom? If Boeing does own those two, then do you know what year they bought out? Because, I can’t include these planes if they were constructed by these manufactures BEFORE any take-overs took place.

PLEASE HELP!

Hi Twinkie,

You need to learn to conduct internet searches most of the data you want is readily available. BTW, there is a aircraft Y!Answers that may be a better place for you to post. Only a few of the engineers are pilots.

The Hornet, Super Hornet, Apache are not really Boeing, as their deployment preceded Boeing ownership. They now supply and are doing upgrades, but not the initial design and production. I guess I would include, but noting that MD bought Hughes (Apache) and Boeing bought MD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH-64_Apache

Boeing bought Vertol back around late 50’s, so they developed Chinook.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CH-47_Chinook

P&W bought a rocket engine company from Boeing. UTC also bought Hamilton. Recheck your facts, I don’t think they are part of Boeing!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_%26_Whitney
Note that Boeing split into 3 seperate companies in 1934 under anti-trust, Boeing, United Airlines, and what became UTC.

Q1: Northrup Grumman B2. Boeing teamed with Northrup on the winning ATB, was a subcontractor, and is still doing some upgrades. I would include. BTW, the sub normally does a lot of the design work too - it is critical! I believe Boeing did a lot of the electronic systems, typically about 1/2 the cost of USAF aircraft.

http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/military/b2bomber/index.html

Q2: North American Aviation did the B-70 Valkyrie in late 50’s/early 60’s, but only 3 prototypes were made. NAA won the Boeing/GD/NAA competion (3 times, I think) and so got the B-1. NAA was bought by Rockwell during this time. Rockwell was eventually bought by Boeing. Compare timing to see exactly when Boeing bought vs. B1 development.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-1_Lancer

Boeing does not own Northrup/Grumman, it is a competitor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman

1997, I believe. Note that while systems are operational, a manufacturer is paid to support and upgrade them. I would tend to count the Eagle, but be accurate!

PS, internet stuff is notoriously unreliable. Look for multiple sources, and cross check to make sure your facts are correct.

"It’s a bird!"
"It’s a plane!"
"It’s…. Oh shit, it IS a plane!"

Did you hear the one about American Airlines new deal? They’ll fly you straight from the airport to the office.

Knock knock!
Who’s there?
Knock knock!!
Knock knock who?
Knock knock knocked all your towers down!

A fireman went home on 9/11 and told his wife that he almost died. "My buddy Stan and I were running toward one tower after the other one fell, he said, "But then Stan got hit by a jumper! Thirty seconds later, the north tower collapsed. If Stan didn’t get hit, we both would have been goners!"

The fireman’s wife turned to him and said, "Is this going to be a long story?"

Q: What does WTC stand for?
A: What Trade Centre?

My girlfriend is flying to north carolina next week and wants to take a laptop. Her mom says it is not allowed. Can she take it? Can it be a carry on or checked? The airline ins "American Airlines"… is there any other restrictions i should know about??????

why is this in the "yahoo products: answers" category?

Starting April 1 Ryan air will no longer allow 14-17 year old to travel unacompanied. This means that all passangers under 18 after April 1 2009 will have to have an adult passanger with them on every flight.

Easyjet will still allow passangers as young as 14 to travel alone. Air lingus will still let children as young as 12 travel alone without supervision. British airways will also allow passangers as young as 12 travel without a parent or escort service.

How will other European and north American airlines respond to Ryan airs policy? I think Ryan airs new policy that will go affect on April 1st is a little too extreme. Will other European airlines end up getting the child passangers who are now going to be too young to fly Ryan air or will Other Airlines raise their flying alone age to 18?

I’m way past age 18. When I was a teen in the 1990s I flew alone to visit family.

No north American carrier has this strict of a policy that Ryan air is going to adopt in April 2009.
I called the one pound per minute telephone number and a ryan air agent asked her supervisor. Her supervisor told her that this new policy is correct.
I called the one pound per minute telephone number and a ryan air agent asked her supervisor. Her supervisor told her that this new policy is correct.
Here is the new policy from Ryan Airs website:

Children under the age of 14 years must always be accompanied on the same reservation by a passenger over 16 years. AS AND FROM THE 1st APRIL 2009 ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS MUST ALWAYS BE ACCOMPANIED ON THE SAME RESERVATION.
On a different section of the Ryan air terms website I found this:

Children under the age of 14 years must always be accompanied on the same reservation by a passenger over 16 years. AS FROM THE 1st APRIL 2009 ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 YEARS MUST ALWAYS BE ACCOMPANIED ON THE SAME RESERVATION.

Could Ryan Air have made a mistake?

I don’t care what is written as information on any websites. I just go by the terms and conditions since they are the basis of the contract concluded between the passengers and the aircraft carrier.

Ryanair terms and conditions tell:

Children and infants

Ryanair does not carry unaccompanied minors (under 14 years). Escort and special facilities are NOT available. Ryanair will carry unaccompanied minors aged 14 or 15 years ONLY upon completion and signature of a Form of Indemnity at check-in of EACH departure airport, by a parent or guardian. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FACILITY WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE AS AND FROM THE 1st APRIL 2009

I therefore think that Ryanair will allow unaccompanied minors from an age of 16 years to travel on their own after 1st April 2009.
This change is not denoted on the Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish Ryanair website; maybe it applies only to the UK and Ireland based on "special behaviour" of some infants in the past.
